As explored by:

“Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone. Its houses climb a hill so steep it would be a cliff except that stairs are cut in it. I believe that whereas most house foundations are vertical, in Positano they are horizontal. The small curving bay of unbelievably blue and green water laps gently on a beach of small pebbles. There is only one narrow street and it does not come down to the water. Everything else is stairs, some of them as steep as ladders. You do not walk to visit a friend, you either climb or slide.

Nearly always when you find a place as beautiful as Positano, your impulse is to conceal it. You think, “If I tell, it will be crowded with tourists and they will ruin it, turn it into a honky-tonk and then the local people will get touristy and there’s your lovely place gone to hell”. There isn’t the slightest chance of this in Positano. In the first place there is no room. There are about two thousand inhabitants in Positano and there is room for about five hundred visitors, no more. The cliffs are all taken. Except for the half ruinous houses very high up, all space is utilized. And the Positanese invariably refuse to sell. They are curious people.”

–John Steinbeck in his essay Positano

“… so it goes that the extreme frustration continued until I heard a voice say, find a motel 6 and call it good. I ignored it, went on the hunt for food, ate soup I had in my snack bag and then hit the rd again. As I got on the fwy.. I look over and there it was… The sign.. Motel 6. Sigh, ok. So I get off the fwy again, find the motel 6 only to be told they are booked solid. But the clerk is the sweetest and calls their sister hotel down the street. They have

I can call our other motel 6 for you.’ Well sure, I say.. That would be so nice. She does, they have one room and they will hold it for me. Yey! the sudden promise of a bed and hot bath are changing my wretched mood. I drive the 15 min, follow the directions she wrote for me and as I make my last turn this is what I see. Acres of land dotted with mares and foals. Ahhh… That’a better. Thank you thank you!! i was heading back to the valley tonight because I didn’t have any other plans, and I knew where I could camp. It was Security. but i was ignoring the journey. I wasn’t trusting. i should know better by now. But I really am still learning.”
