From last New Year’s until tonight’s full moon:

I drove to the Oregon Coast. I climbed to the highest point I could find, staring at the grey and how the river met the sea. I cut off all my hair. I went to the town where my mother was born so I could bury my grandmother. I flew to London. I learned how to say ‘pregnant’ in German. I nested at home. I flew across the ocean again. I saw Africa in the distance, and felt it in my bones. I took careful steps on the streets of Durcal and the remains of the Alhambra, acutely aware of my precious cargo. I learned ‘it’ was a he.’ I learned my marriage was over. I stayed in one place. I moved into a dream home, all windows and light. I literally passed a human being out of my body. I saw my former spouse become my best friend. I found out how to succumb to joy. I moved out to the hills, on a moment’s notice, because “the mountains themselves call us into greatness.” I held my son by my side. I did not take enough photos. I let it all go, and I could not wait for the gifts of 2013.

vagabond year end.
